How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Being Annoying)

Reviews are the single biggest lever on local rankings and conversion. Here's a system that consistently generates 5–15 new reviews per month.

Reviews are the single biggest lever on local rankings and conversion. A business with 200+ reviews at 4.7 stars outperforms a 4.9-star competitor with 20 reviews on almost every meaningful metric.

The 3-touch review system

Touch 1: In person, right after the win. When the customer says "great job," reply: "Would you mind sharing that in a Google review? It really helps a small business like ours." Then send the link.

Touch 2: Text, same day. Short, personal, direct.

> Hey [Name], thanks again for choosing us today. If you have 30 seconds, here's the link to leave a Google review: [link]. It genuinely helps us out.

Touch 3: Email, 48 hours later. Only for customers who haven't responded yet. Same tone, no guilt trip.

Tools that make it easy

  • Short review link from Google Business Profile → Reviews → Get more reviews.
  • QR codes on invoices, business cards, van decals, and receipts.
  • Automate the text with a tool like Podium, Birdeye, or a simple Zapier flow.

What NOT to do

  • Never offer a discount, gift card, or entry to a giveaway. Against Google's terms and can get you suspended.
  • Don't ask for "5 stars." Ask for a review — let the customer decide.
  • Don't gate reviews (ask happy customers to leave a review and unhappy ones to email you). Also against terms.

Responding to reviews

  • 5-star: reply within 48 hours. Use their name. Reference something specific.
  • 4-star: thank them and ask what would have made it a 5.
  • 3-star and below: reply publicly, calm and specific, then take it offline. Never argue.
