How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Being Annoying)

Reviews are the single biggest lever on local rankings and conversion. Here's a system that consistently generates 5–15 new reviews per month.

Reviews are the single biggest lever on local rankings and conversion. A business with 200+ reviews at 4.7 stars outperforms a 4.9-star competitor with 20 reviews on almost every meaningful metric.

The 3-touch review system

Touch 1: In person, right after the win. When the customer says "great job," reply: "Would you mind sharing that in a Google review? It really helps a small business like ours." Then send the link.

Touch 2: Text, same day. Short, personal, direct.

Hey [Name], thanks again for choosing us today. If you have 30 seconds, here's the link to leave a Google review: [link]. It genuinely helps us out.

Touch 3: Email, 48 hours later. Only for customers who haven't responded yet. Same tone, no guilt trip.

Tools that make it easy

  • Short review link from Google Business Profile → Reviews → Get more reviews.
  • QR codes on invoices, business cards, van decals, and receipts.
  • Automate the text with a tool like Podium, Birdeye, or a simple Zapier flow.

What NOT to do

  • Never offer a discount, gift card, or entry to a giveaway. Against Google's terms and can get you suspended.
  • Don't ask for "5 stars." Ask for a review — let the customer decide.
  • Don't gate reviews (ask happy customers to leave a review and unhappy ones to email you). Also against terms.

Responding to reviews

  • 5-star: reply within 48 hours. Use their name. Reference something specific.
  • 4-star: thank them and ask what would have made it a 5.
  • 3-star and below: reply publicly, calm and specific, then take it offline. Never argue.

Common questions

Quick answers about this topic

Short answers first, then the detail. Skim what you need.

How many Google reviews do I need to rank?

It depends on your competitors.

In most industries, matching the median review count in the local top 3 is the minimum entry ticket.

Is it OK to send review requests via text?

Yes, as long as the customer opted in and the request isn't tied to a reward.

Text has 4–8x the response rate of email.

What if I get a fake or unfair review?

Flag it through GBP and provide context in a public reply.

Google removes clearly fake ones but is slow — the reply matters more than the flag.
